Clarity Coach Based in Nairobi
Know More About Me
My purpose is to help boys and young men find clarity so they can achieve their full potential. I believe that every human being has unique strengths, abilities, and values. When you find clarity, you will reach your desired goals and live your life to the fullest.
In 2018, I began working as an untrained Children’s TV Producer. My work involved interacting and spending lots of time with children and young people. Most of these young people were boys who had low self-esteem and believed they were destined to fail.
They also lacked responsible parenting, male role models and father-figures. Having grown up with the same challenges, I identified with them.
I started encouraging them to focus on what they had instead of focusing on what they lacked. With time, we started exploring what finding clarity meant in terms of setting smart goals. We explored what it feels like when a young man discovers and uses the treasures they possess.
How It All Began
In July 2012, I met a group of 100 boys at the Nairobi Remand Prison, Industrial Area. I was overwhelmed and I felt love, compassion and responsibility towards each of the boys and soon devoted to having sessions for them during my off day, on Fridays.
I discovered that 90% of the boys did not know what they want to be when they grow up. 60% of them had not been visited by their families. They needed someone to accompany them to court. They also needed someone to visit their families and the people they had wronged.
When most of them got released they soon returned to prison as hardened criminals. The boys needed intervention to break the vicious cycle of crime and re-offending. I was determined to help the boys reconnect with their families, the people they had hurt as well as set goals using a vision board.
They also needed supplies like underwear, bar soap, slippers and toothpaste. I used my salary to go to prison, visit families and the people the boys had wronged. When I didn’t have enough, I asked for help from friends or walked on foot to visit them.
When my supervisor at my TV job heard that I was going to prison, she asked me to choose between focusing on the TV job or going to prison. I thought about the salary I was earning from my job which I was enjoying. I thought about the boys, their families and their future lives.
Choosing between my job as a producer and going to prison was one of the most difficult decision I had to make. With a heavy heart, I chose the boys and planned to use my writing as a fall back plan.
Six months later, I quit my job and founded Lifesong Kenya and continue working with boys in prison. I continued working alone, mostly staying with one friend after another because I could not afford to rent. I went to the furthest corners of Nairobi tracing families of the boys in prison, working all alone, hungry and thirsty.
Many times when I shared stories and the plight of the young men in prison and failed to find help, I felt desperate. Much as I did not have any academic qualifications as a social worker, I felt qualified by God. I also did not have a strategy or a plan and didn’t know how to draft one. I just kept working.
In November 2014, I accompanied a family to a medical mission trip to Baragoi, Kenya. As a volunteer all I had were buttons, sewing thread and needles. As I sewed buttons for children, I thought about my future and wondered whether I had lost my mind!
But I kept believing in my vision because I knew I was in God’s will. A year later, I got married to the love of my life who believed in my dreams and vision for boys in detention.
As I look back, I realize my life and destiny is tied with that of the boys. They have become part of my life and success. Each of these boys is a wonderful person and human being who deserve a shoulder to lean on and a new beginning.
Seeing the exceptional young men I coach thrive gives me satisfaction and fulfillment. It gives me joy to see exceptional young men gain clarity, confidence and become the best they can ever be.
When you gain clarity and confidence to pursue your desired goals, a shift happens. If you are feeling lost, confused and need clarity you need a coach to help you chart the way forward.
