My Story

I quit TV Production career in 2013 after meeting 100 boys in juvenile prison. Here’s my story.

Life is a song

This is My Story

I was thirteen years old when my father died. In a single moment, the solid foundation beneath me disappeared. Without a father and a roadmap, I navigated adolescence largely alone. I saw firsthand what fatherlessness does to a boy’s sense of identity, belonging, worth and direction.

Years later, I joined and dropped out of college. Instead of going back to the villade, I moved to Eastlands Nairobi — a neighbourhood marked by poverty, broken families and systemic neglect. I watched as young men around me disappeared one by one into the streets, into prisons and into drugs and alcohol.

I stared staying with different friends that I had met at Our Lady of Visitation Church, Makadara, along Jogoo Road. In 2005, I was staying with a friend when I got arrested and spent 8 days at Makongeni Police Station. Those eight days changed my life.

The Awakening

While I was hurting, getting arrested turned into a blessing in disguise! I was thinking about the pain of growing up without a father, when Moha, who was in the cells with me, made a statement that changed my life!

“You look like you have grown up with a father!” he said. Can you teach us what we need to do in order to become better men?” he asked.

At that monent I discovered two things. First, I realized I had treasure that I needed to amplify instead of focusing on the troubles I had grown up with.

I also discovered that a single moment of being truly seen and heard can alter the trajectory of a person’s life. I experienced this when Moha called out what he saw in me and gave me an opportunity to thrive in it. For the rest of the next 8 days, I spent time talking about the importance of focuing on finding treasure instead of amplifying trouble and what is not working in our favour.

I made a decision to create a safe space where individuals can discover and nurture their treasure and gifts. I founded Lifesong Kenya with a vision rooted in my own wounds and my own healing.

Today, Lifesong Kenya operates from the same foundations that I grew up needing — a deliberate choice to show up, to explore options and to keep showing up for boys who are still living the story that I once lived.

The Training

After years of working with incarcerated youth in juvenile prison, I was looking for training as a coach. I believed that coaching would empower me to provide the best help for the boys I was meeting in prison and their families.

I got an opportunity to train as a Co-Active Coach, thanks to a scholarship that I received from Co-Active Training Institute in 2020. One of the things that I liked immediately was the fact that the model that focuses on the following principles:-

  • Naturally Creative, Resourceful, and Whole: Clients do not need “fixing.” They already possess the answers and wisdom needed to navigate their challenges.
  • Dance in This Moment: Coaches adapt fluidly to the client’s needs in real-time, following what is organically arising in the session rather than rigidly sticking to a fixed agenda.
  • Focus on the Whole Person: Coaching addresses the entire spectrum of a client’s humanity—including values, roles, environment, and lived experiences—rather than just their presenting problem.
  • Evoke Transformation: The goal goes beyond incremental changes to behavior; it aims for a shift in how the client relates to themselves, others, and their work.

This has enabled me to grow as an individual and leader. While I used to look at my work with boys as a mistake, I consider it as an important leader’s stake, thanks to my training as a Co-Active Coach.

The Work

After receiving training as a Co-Active Coach and Co-Active Leader, I am now developing a business to enable me earn income. Through Born for Greatness, I am creating paid experiences where parents can pay me to coach and mentor their children.

This is also a great way for me to create an avenue where the young men I am meeting through Lifesong Kenya, can have jobs and have a source of income. It also offers me an opportunity to amplify my impact as a coach and leader.
