Is there someone who has had a lasting and meaningful impact in your life? Are there goals and achievements in your life that this person inspired? Maybe it was your teacher, a role model, Sunday school pastor or a mentoring program.
For *18-year-old Waylong Bulimu, it was a mentor and the men around him who believed in his potential to thrive. Whenever he would hang around and spend time with us, we would always push him to be the best he can ever be.
“You have infinite potential,” James Ouma said. “If you discover what you want to achieve, we can help you find clarity.”
In 2017, Waylong was at a crossroad, having just arrived in prison. His absent father wasn’t visiting him in prison and his dream to a better life lay in tatters.
After he was released, Waylong couldn’t go home. Fortunately, he found refuge at St Joseph Cafasso Consolation House where our mentoring program with him continues.
In 2019, Waylong sat for his KCPE, passed and joined high school.
That is the power of mentoring!
The Influence of Mentoring
If you ask a close friend about their achievements, they are likely to share about an influential mentor. Professional, spiritual or personal mentoring has a long lasting effect and influence. The common thread in all kinds of mentoring is ongoing support, hope, guidance, objective encouragement and experience.
Research proves that mentoring has positive and long-lasting benefits. Mentoring increases confidence and boosts self-esteem of boys who are in a mentoring program. Boys who receive mentoring are less likely to engage in social vices. As a result, they are better placed to overcome negative peer pressure and stay out of trouble.
Not only does mentoring improve academic performance, school attendance and attitudes. It also has a long lasting effect and influence that can be passed on to future generations.
