It is months, or even years, since you sat for your KCSE and your wait to join college drags on. What do you do when nothing seems to be working in your favour? Here are the 4 things you can do while waiting for college money.
Why is college important?
According to the Southern New Hamphsire University website, going to college can have significant impact in your life. For instance, college offers you the following:-
- better career opportunities
- job stability
- career growth
- long-term financial gain
In addition, college enables you to be more marketable, flexible and versatile compared to someone who lacks college education. But what happens when your parents cannot afford to take you to college?
You wait, right?
Waiting to join college when money is not available is not easy. This is especially so when you know your family cannot afford to make ends meet. As a result, you may find yourself having to watch as your peers join and finish college.
To make matter worse, even the students who were a couple of years behind you in high school have graduated. Your failure to commit and focus on one thing is also causing problems. Those closest to you have begun whispering things that are getting on your nerves.
Maybe your mom has begun drawing comparisons between you and your peers. This can affect your confidence. You have two choices. You can either wallow in self-pity and blame your situation. Or you can do something about it.
4 Things You Can do While Waiting for College Money
1. Upgrade your wardrobe
Chances are that you like wearing a hoodie, skinny jeans and have earphones glued to your ears all the time. You need to change this. Wearing a hoodie and earphones seems fashionable, but it has many disadvantages.
A hoodie makes you look mysterious. Wearing earphones all the times may prevent people from engaging with you. As a result, it may create a negative impression about you. It makes you look like you are hiding something and that you are unapproachable.
To prevent this, you can invest in clothes that projects a positive image to the outside world. This will open doors of opportunities for you.
2. Change your attitude
I am sure you have heard that your attitude determines your success. Contrary to what most young people believe, attitude is changeable and controllable.
For instance, suggestion that you should ditch hoodies, skinny jeans and earphones may offend you. Your attitude towards correction determines how you relate with others.
3. Find a Job
Finding a job is very important. You can find a job at MPesa shops, coffee joints, supermarkets or baby-sitting. This will enable you to earn an income that you can save as you plan to join college soon.
You can also volunteer your services to an organization in your community. While there is no guarantee that you will get paid, you will gain valuable work experience.
Ensure that you start building and add every experience and skill learned on your CV. This will come in handy when you apply for a job in the future.
The best idea of a place to work for could be where you plan to work in the future. Once you have identified the best fit, apply for the lowest position.
A good idea of a position can be as a cleaner, messenger or serving tea. If you are bold enough, you can apply to work as a personal assistant to a person you admire.
For instance, if you are an aspiring TV host, you can approach Joyce Omondi, Larry Madowo or Sheila Mwanyigah and offer to work as a personal assistant. This requires lots of courage and common sense. This will provide you with an opportunity to gain valuable skills and experience.
4. Make good use of the internet
I am sure that you know the power of the internet to empower and distract. The internet provides us with education, celebrity gossip, politics, entertainment and sports. Instead of catching up listening to music and watching movies, why don’t you learn a skill online?
You can also have a Facebook page where you share what you are learning. With time, your page will attract followers and turn you into an authority in your field. What’s more, it can be a funnel through which you make a tidy income and also employ others.
Make sure you use your real name on social media and have a profile that speaks about who want to be. A good profile will help you in building your personal brand.
This list of 4 things you can do while waiting for college money may not be conclusive. But, it is a good starting point. Going to college offers you the best path to a successful career. Sometimes, it is not easy to get into college due to a number of reasons.
This doesn’t stop you from doing something that will help you to earn an income and gain valuable skills and experience. Having worked as an untrained TV producer, I know the value of going after your dream career.
